Thinking Out Loud...Blessings of a Tiny Church

Usually when I describe St. Andrews I use the word “small” but comparatively speaking, we’re actually tiny. So why would you (and I don’t know who you are, but I’m sure you’re nice) want to attend a tiny church with all those other options out there? Well, I’ll tell you – at least from my perspective as the pastor these past three years.

Most of my own faith journey was spent in large churches with all the bells and whistles and the seeming constant need to “keep up” with whatever the latest, greatest church trend might be. Nothing wrong with that really, but sometimes with a lot going on, it’s easy to forget the basics: worship, pastoral care, fellowship. I think we do those pretty well in our tiny church - mostly because we’re not competing with anyone, we’re just sticking to those basics and trying to live into and out of our profession of faith.

And, yes, without any distractions all your flaws may be easily revealed. That’s okay, because as the pastor, I want you to know that I’m not perfect and I don’t have all the answers, but I will do my best to bring you a worship service that’s relevant and authentic each week.

In a tiny church you learn about one another pretty quickly. You know each other’s names…everyone’s name, not just the person who sits in your pew every week. Perhaps that’s a little too exposed for you? Maybe, but a leap of faith into a new church community sometimes means allowing yourself to open up a little more each time because you know you are safe, accepted and loved for who you are. Frankly, I’ve yet to meet the person (well aside from Jesus – but that’s not a fair comparison, is it?) who isn’t pretty broken in one way or another regardless of the image they present to the world.

So, come visit us at St. Andrews – a tiny church in the heart of Dilworth. Who knows – if you start coming we might even graduate to “small”!
